What is plastic-free body lotion?

When I first started sourcing ingredients for what would become our line of environmentally friendly lotions, I’d never stopped to ask a simple question: what’s actually in the body lotion most people slather on every day? I’d spent years working with sustainable agriculture, so I knew plastic was a problem, but it wasn’t until I dug into the skin care supply chain that I realized just how much plastic hides in a single tube. From the thick plastic pump that squeezes out the lotion to the microbeads many brands still use for exfoliation, even a “gentle” or “natural” lotion could be a microplastic minefield. That’s when I set out to build something different: plastic-free body lotion. But what does that even mean, beyond just skipping a plastic tube? It’s not as easy as you might think—so let’s break it down. Environmentally Friendly Lotion

First, let’s get one thing straight: plastic-free body lotion isn’t just a marketing buzzword. It’s a product designed from the very first ingredient to the final packaging to avoid any plastic that could end up as microplastics in our oceans, soil, or even our own bodies. Most conventional lotions tick a lot of boxes that people think are “safe” for skin or the planet. They’re often labeled “paraben-free” or “cruelty-free,” but dig a little deeper, and you’ll find hidden plastic everywhere. Let’s start with the formula itself. A lot of lotion brands use plastic-derived ingredients to thicken, stabilize, or extend the shelf life of their products. Things like polyethylene (the same plastic used in grocery bags), propylene glycol, and even some silicones are synthetic plastics that don’t break down easily, and when they wear off your skin or wash down the drain, they end up in wastewater treatment plants that can’t filter out tiny plastic particles. Some studies have even found these microplastics in human bloodstreams and lung tissue, which is a big deal for something we’re putting on such a large surface area of our bodies.

Plastic-free body lotion skips all of that. Instead of relying on synthetic plastic ingredients, we use plant-based alternatives that not only work better for your skin but are biodegradable. For thickeners, we use things like shea butter, cocoa butter, or gum arabic from acacia trees—all natural, nourishing, and break down in weeks instead of hundreds of years. For stabilizers, we turn to lecithin from sunflowers or soybeans, which is a naturally occurring emulsifier that keeps water and oil (the two main parts of lotion) mixed without any plastic chemicals. Even the texture comes from things like aloe vera juice, jojoba oil, and coconut oil—all ingredients that your skin can actually absorb, instead of sitting on top of it like a plastic film (another trick conventional lotions use to make skin feel soft temporarily, but that can clog pores over time).

Then there’s the packaging, which is the other big part of plastic-free lotion. A lot of brands will say “our lotion is plastic-free!” and only mean the formula, but the packaging is where a lot of the damage happens. The average single-use plastic tube takes 450 years to decompose, and most people don’t recycle them because they’re made of mixed materials (plastic plus aluminum foil, which can’t be processed easily). For our plastic-free lotion, we use 100% compostable packaging. Right now, that means amber glass jars with metal screw lids—no plastic seals inside, just a thin layer of beeswax that melts away to seal the jar naturally, no plastic involved. The labels? We use uncoated, recyclable paper with soy-based ink, so when the jar is done, you can toss it in your backyard compost, and it will break down into soil in less than a year. We even avoid shrink wrap entirely, using paper bands to hold sets together instead. I know some brands use bamboo tubes, but most bamboo tubes still have a thin plastic liner inside to keep the lotion from seeping through—ours skip that entirely, because we’re formulating the lotion to be thick enough to not leak, and the glass is durable enough to last for years of reuse.

A common question we get from customers is: “If it’s plastic-free, does it work as well as conventional lotion?” The short answer is yes—often better. Conventional lotions rely on plastic chemicals to lock in moisture for long periods, but those same chemicals can strip your skin of its natural oils over time, leading to dryness and irritation. Our plastic-free lotions use organic, cold-pressed plant oils that sink into your skin immediately, providing deep, lasting moisture without the greasy residue. We also skip synthetic fragrances, which are another hidden source of plastic and skin irritants. Instead, we use essential oils for scent and added benefits—like lavender for calm, tea tree for acne-prone skin, and rosehip for anti-aging. A lot of our customers who have sensitive skin or eczema tell us our lotions are the first ones that don’t leave their skin feeling tight or cause breakouts, which makes sense when you’re not slathering synthetic plastic chemicals on your body every day.

But here’s the part that not a lot of people talk about: making plastic-free body lotion isn’t just about ingredients and packaging—it’s about responsible sourcing and reducing waste at every step. A lot of sustainable brands will use “organic” ingredients that are flown across the world, which adds more carbon emissions than the plastic they’re trying to avoid. For our lotions, we source as many ingredients as possible within 300 miles of our facility. The shea butter comes from women’s cooperatives in West Africa, where fair trade practices ensure the farmers get a living wage, and the sunflower oil for lecithin comes from a family farm just two hours from our warehouse. We also recycle all of our production waste—any leftover pomace from cold-pressing oils goes to a local animal farm as feed, and any glass scraps from cutting jars get melted down and reused instead of sent to a landfill. We even use rainwater to mix our lotions, reducing our reliance on municipal water supplies by 40% compared to conventional lotion manufacturers.

Another big myth about plastic-free lotion is that it’s more expensive than conventional options. It’s true that the initial cost of organic, fair trade ingredients and compostable packaging is higher than cheap plastic materials, but when you calculate the long-term cost, it evens out—and you’re not paying for something that will sit in a landfill for centuries. A standard plastic tube of lotion might cost $10, but you’ll go through it in a month and toss the tube after one use. Our glass jars are reusable—customers can wash them out and use them for storing spices, face creams, or even hosting candle nights, and the lotion inside lasts twice as long because there’s no plastic preservatives that make it go bad quickly. So a $25 jar of our lotion can last you three or four months, which works out to less than you’d spend on three $10 plastic tubes in the same time.

We’ve also noticed a shift in what customers are looking for when it comes to body care. Just five years ago, people were drawn to “natural” lotions because of the scent or the marketing, but now they’re asking specific questions: “Is this plastic-free? What’s in the packaging? Where did the ingredients come from?” That’s exactly why we started our line—because we were tired of seeing brands greenwashing the term “sustainable” by checking one box (like being paraben-free) while ignoring the bigger problem of plastic. A recent study from the Ocean Conservancy found that single-use plastic personal care products make up 10% of all plastic litter in the world’s oceans, and body lotion tubes are one of the top culprits. That’s not just a problem for marine life—every time we wash off a plastic-based lotion, we’re adding microplastics to the water supply that can end up in our food, our soil, and our bodies.

Making the switch to plastic-free body lotion is a small change, but it’s one that adds up. A single person can reduce 10 plastic tubes a year from their routine, and if thousands of people do that, that’s tens of thousands of plastic tubes kept out of landfills and oceans. It’s also a way to support brands that are doing better by the planet and by workers—something that matters more than ever when so many industries rely on cheap, plastic-based materials that harm both people and the environment.

If you’re a business owner, spa, or retailer looking to add a truly sustainable lotion line to your shelves, we can work with you to create custom blends for your brand, or offer wholesale pricing for bulk orders. We prioritize partnerships with businesses that share our commitment to eliminating plastic from every part of the product lifecycle, and we’re happy to walk you through our sourcing, packaging, and production processes to show you exactly how we make plastic-free body lotion that works for both your customers and the planet. We believe that sustainable body care shouldn’t be a luxury—it should be standard, and we’re here to make that happen.
